Contractor interviews – are you ready?

createteam News, Running Your Business, Starting Up

You have probably had your fair share of interviews as a permanent employee, but contractor interviews are slightly different.

In the following paragraphs, we’ll provide you with a wealth of top tips to help you prepare more effectively for your next contractor interview.

Preparation

Contractors are coveted for their expert skills and knowledge, so it is imperative that you prepare extremely well for any contractor interview, to give yourself the best chance of winning the contract.

Preparation is key, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to conduct your research and prepare for interview.

Find out everything you can about the project and brush up on your technical knowledge. Thoroughly research the client so you know who they are and what they do going in.

Make sure you understand what the client is looking for

While unrivalled industry experience is invaluable, there are other factors that will be taken into account, and the person with the most experience won’t automatically be handed the role.

During your research, it’s important to gain a complete understanding of what the client is looking for in a contractor, so you can tailor your pitch to their needs.

If you found the role through a recruiter, it won’t hurt to touch base with them to find out more about what’s on the client’s wish list. The recruiter wants the position filled as much as anyone, so they should be more than happy to give you a few pointers.

Ask questions

An interview is a two-way street. You’ll need to make sure that the client is someone that you feel you can work with, so never be shy about asking questions.

More often than not, when the interviewer asks a contractor if they have any questions, they usually decline and say something along the lines of “no, I think everything we’ve covered so far has answered any questions that I did have.” This is a missed opportunity, both to find out more about the role, and to demonstrate that you’re interested.

Make an effort to ask some questions and to show an interest in the client and the project you’ll be undertaking. You’ll be able to gain a greater insight into whether or not the contract is the right fit for you, and you’ll show the client that you have a keen interest in the project.

Develop an effective interview routine

Just as with interviews for permanent roles, developing a set framework that you use each time you are offered an interview can be extremely useful.

Everyone is different, so what works well for you may not be as useful for someone else. Consequently, your framework will probably differ from someone else’s, but here are some suggestions to help you.

Dressing to impress

It’s always better to over dress than under dress in interviews. A lot can be said about a person by the clothes they wear. If you can think about what you need to wear the night before, this will save you any additional unwanted stress on the day.

Getting in a positive frame of mind

On the morning of your interview do something to shake off the nerves and get you in a positive frame of mind. Everyone is different, but a few suggestions include going for a run, listening to loud music or watching a feel-good film

Don’t let the nerves get the better of you

It’s natural that you’ll experience some nerves; you wouldn’t be normal if you didn’t. Contractor interviews can be stressful, especially if you are in between contracts at the moment, but it is essential that you put yourself at ease with the interview process and come across confidently.

Take a deep breath and show the client exactly why they should be offering you the position.

With each interview you’ll grow in confidence, so even if you’re not successful in the first few interviews as your confidence grows so too will the likelihood of you being awarded a contract.
