Thanks to the power of the Internet it isn’t hard to find an endless list of recruitment agencies. However, finding the right agency for you can be more of a challenge.
With so many recruitment agencies to choose from, how do you know which ones have the most appropriate roles and are ultimately best placed to find you that next contract?
In the following paragraphs, we’ll breakdown exactly what you need to look for in a recruitment agency.
Does the agency specialise in your niche?
Agencies come in various shapes and sizes; some are more general in their approach, while others will specialise in specific industries and niches.
Ideally you want to find a recruitment agency that has a wealth of experience in recruiting for roles in the sector that you specialise in. If they have placed contractors like you in similar roles before, they’re likely to be well equipped to find you your next contract.
If you are in a highly technical sector, like oil and gas, it is recommended that you focus your attention on niche recruiters who specialise in your sector. Larger, more mass targeted recruitment agencies could still have attractive positions but highly specialist agencies tend to be better, and be more aware of the nuances of the industry and the value of your experience and qualifications.
Who has recommended them?
Never be afraid to ask for references. Any agency worth their salt will have a wealth of positive reviews from happy contractors. If they are good, people will be happy to tell you so.
If you aren’t comfortable with asking for references directly, you can always look at the various review websites as they are bound to have reviews from previous candidates.
Bear in mind that people are more likely to leave a negative review than a positive one, so don’t be put off by one or two negative comments. However, if you notice a recurring theme in the negative reviews they could be an agency that you’d be better off avoiding.
Meet the agency face to face
Finally, make sure you meet any prospective recruitment agency face to face. You’ll find that recruiters will work ten times harder for you if they have met you and got a good feel for who you are and what you hope to achieve.
By meeting recruiters in person you’ll get a much better feel for how they work and can therefore make a more informed decision about whether they are the right agency for you.
