Contractors and freelancers are responsible for finding their own work. It may be tempting to sit back and hope the work will come to you, but given that your contracting business will succeed or fail on your ability to source new work, you’ll need to proactively seek new contracts, especially in the early stages when you are yet to build a healthy network of contacts.
Whether you are just starting out as a telecoms contractor, or you have been contracting for a few years, the following top tips will help you to get your name out there and greatly increase your chances of finding contract work.
Speak to recruiters
Just as when you were a permanent employee, recruiters should be your first port of call. You’ll already be familiar with recruitment agencies so we won’t bore you with the technicalities, but it’s important to be aware of the opportunity they present.
Recruiters will have a wealth of contract roles on their books, so it’s well worth getting in touch with a few and having a meeting to discuss the type of work you are looking for within telecoms. The recruiters will then put you forward for contracts that they feel you are suited to. Needless to say, recruiters are a useful method of finding instant work.
All you need to do is perform a quick Google search for telecoms contract related terms and you’d be presented with a wealth of recruitment agencies to get in contact with.
Attend networking events
The old saying rings true with finding contract work, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”
With this in mind you’ll need to develop your networking skills and become a pro at developing leads and contacts. The more useful connections you generate the greater the chance you have of being able to win business.
Have a look on sites like meetups.com to find networking events in your area and just get used to talking to people. This won’t provide you instant work most of the time but you could just make that one contact that is able to provide you with a BIG contract or put you in touch with someone who can help.
Networking takes place online as well, so get signed up on LinkedIn and start contacting people and engaging in relevant groups.
It’s certainly worth investing in a website, so prospective clients can find information about your services and contact details. In order to create a ‘professional look’ and brand identity, the website should reflect who you are and what your business is all about but this doesn’t mean it should cost a fortune.
There are countless freelancers on sites like People Per Hour who will be able to design and build a website at an extremely affordable rate. You don’t need anything too fancy; as long as it is visually appealing and does a good job of displaying information about your services, you know you are on the right track.
A website can be seen as your online CV. You’ll be able to direct would be clients to it via job applications and so much more.
Ultimately, you could talk to an SEO professional and seek their advice on how you can improve the ranking of your site on Google for terms like “telecoms contractor London.” To appear in the first few results for such terms would certainly prove to be invaluable.
Try direct sales
Picking up the phone is difficult, there’s no doubt about that. However, telemarketing can be one of the best ways to get people interested in your business. Find some local data, write a script and pick up the phone!
It’s not an easy task but many contractors we work with have had success with direct sales. You just need to be confident in your abilities and make it come across on the phone.
