Life as a contractor is extremely rewarding but there is no denying that it has its difficulties. Probably the most difficult challenge you’ll face as a contractor is finding work and due to the temporary nature of your job you’ll need to develop a strong strategy to generate work as and when you need it.
There is no quick fix that will guarantee that you win the contract of your dreams, but there are a few things that you can do to put you in the best position possible.
We work with contractors just like you on a daily basis and we have picked up countless useful tips along the way. In the following paragraphs we’ll share a few things that you can do to improve your chances of winning that next contract and expand your network of connections – and you don’t need to be a sales and marketing guru to do them.
Make use of recruitment agencies
Just like when you were a permanent employee, recruitment agencies should be your first port of call for contract work. There are countless recruitment agencies to choose from and all the big agencies will have contract roles, but there are also certain agencies that specialise entirely in temporary work, so it is worth having a good look around.
Another thing to bear in mind is that if you are contracting in a highly technical and specialised field, such as oil and gas, you’ll be best off speaking to dedicated recruitment agencies that have experience in the sector. Consequently you’ll have greater access to a wealth of roles and they’ll know exactly what you need to do to be in the best position possible to win a new contract.
Create a strong contractor CV
Your contractor CV will be the most important document that you own. Each time you apply for a new role you’ll send off your CV so it is imperative that it does a good job of selling your skills.
Unlike your permanent job CV you don’t need to place emphasis on your long-term goals and aspirations. Potential clients will be much more interested in your skills and the immediate impact that you can make on their business.
Utilise your existing contacts
If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile already, make sure you create one now! It is a fantastic resource with many opportunities to help you find work, but the best feature is being able to add your existing business connections.
You’ll be able to keep track of people’s careers and you might just find that you know someone who works at a company that can help you in your search for work.
Once you have created a LinkedIn profile add your existing business contacts as connections and see if there are any potential opportunities for you to take advantage of. Just dropping a contact a message to see if they can help you out might just get the ball rolling.
Develop a website
Everything is online these days. The first place any of us go to find out more information about a product or service is the Internet. Consequently, if you don’t have an online presence you are missing out on a fantastic opportunity.
Let’s say you are an oil and gas contractor, imagine having a website and appearing in the first few results on Google when someone types in ‘oil and gas contractor.’ That would be some invaluable exposure and you can guarantee that it would generate a fair amount of leads each year.
With this in mind, consider designing a website that promotes your skills and abilities – just like an interactive online CV. There are countless online website builder tools if you want to do it yourself or you could contact a local freelancer and they will be able to build you something professional yet affordable.
Just make sure that it includes your skills, experience and contact details!
