Should I use a specialist accountant?

integro Starting Up

In short, yes, using a specialist accountant is by far the best approach. Here are some reasons as to why we believe that to be the case:

  • A specialist accountant will have experience in some very specific areas that are relevant to your situation as a contractor, consultant or freelancer.
  • A generalist accountant will ordinarily bill by the minute for time spent looking into and answering your queries, whereas a specialist accountant will have those answers already at their fingertips. This leads to a much more efficient service at a lower cost, making a specialist accountant far better value for money.
  • A specialist accountant’s internal systems will be set up to provide all the services that you need from them, saving you from having to do a lot of tasks yourself, like submit your own VAT returns for example.
  • A specialist accountant is there to save you time as well as money, as they recognise that your time and energy goes primarily into being a contractor, consultant or freelancer rather than a business owner. You are also more likely to get one point of contact with a specialist accountant as a generalist accountant will often, for example, have a point of contact for accounts; another for company tax; and another for personal tax.
